Republican Gov. Linda Lingle Vetoes Hawaii's Civil Unions Bill

Republican Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed Hawaii's Civil Unions Bill last Tuesday. “I have been open and consistent in my opposition to same-sex marriage, and find that House Bill 444 is essentially same sex marriage by another name.” said Gov. Lingle. The bill, which was approved by the Hawaii Legislature last April, would have given same sex couples the same rights as married couples do in Hawaii. 17 years ago Hawaii should have been the first state in the nation to approve same sex marriages when the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that the denial of marriage licenses to same sex couples was unconstitutional. Today, both the Hawaiian House and state Senate approves civil unions. All that stands in the way is the governor.

On July 14, 2010 the Argentinian legislative body will come together to begin the last round of debates on same sex marriages. Both the lower house and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner approve of same sex marriages. The opposition, however, has opted to support civil unions instead. The civil unions option is stronger in the Argentinian Senate.
